Initially learning electric guitar styles and focusing mainly on rock and blues, Richard progressed rapidly as a student. But as his interest in the guitar deepened he started having formal lessons on the classical guitar with a renowned classical guitar teacher who also taught at Birmingham Conservatoire. Richard continued to study classical guitar with his teacher until 2013.
Whilst time learning classical guitar he still regularly practised electric guitar styles and during his late teens and early 20s he played lead guitar in a rock band called The Rush Hour, based in Birmingham. The Rush Hour gigged regularly around the area and had some small success recording and releasing a number of EPs.
